Since its inception in 2012, NASA Space Apps Challenge, a part of NASA’s Earth Science Division, has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens each year across the globe in a 48-hour global hackathon to work with NASA in building innovative solutions for challenges we face on Earth and in space using open source data.

The hackathon embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to advance space exploration missions and improve life on Earth. It is open to anyone who has a passion for making a difference and is focused on developing real solutions to global challenges.

Space Apps Cairo is proud to host its local hackathon for the third year in a row. Since 2015, it has ranked amongst the most successful city hackathons worldwide; having the largest number of registered applicants globally, producing the largest number of on-site solutions and being the largest event led by women organizers.

Space Apps Cairo is co-organized by IEEE Egypt Section, part of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE): the world’s largest professional association advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.

2015 Highlights

Space apps Cairo 2015 was announced the largest event in the world. From 700 over registered participants, we shortlisted 230 participants to join Cairo’s event, and together they worked to solve NASA’s challenges in 48 hours in Nile University on 11th-12th April, 2015.

2016 Highlights

Space Apps Cairo 2016 was the largest event around the world for the second year in row, and was selected by the global organizers to attend, where Blake Garcia joined us and handed us the trophy of the extraordinary 2016 Space Apps event. 55 teams competed in Zewail City for Science & Technology on April 23rd-24th, 2016.

The International Space Apps is one of the greatest events that Egypt could host. Innovation is part of the youth’s characteristics. I encourage you all to delve into the topics of the International Space Apps, provide ideas, change perceptions and keep on trying to think about space exploration and how we can improve life on Earth in the future.
