Hackathon starts in


Space Apps Cairo is proud to host its local hackathon for the fourth year in a row. Since 2015, it has ranked amongst
the most successful city hackathons worldwide; having the largest number of registered applicants globally, producing the largestnumber of on-site solutions and being the largest event led by women organizers.

The Hackathon

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens each year across the globe in a 48-hour global hackathon to work with NASA in building innovative solutions for challenges using open source data.

The Challenge

The hackathon embraces collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to advance space exploration missions and improve life on Earth. It is open to anyone who has a passion for making a difference and is focused on developing real solutions to global challenges.

Space Apps Cairo is organized by IEEE Egypt Section, part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): the world’s largest professional association advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.

This year's local theme is about special education in Egypt. The challenge is to develop a tool (software or hardware) to be used as an assistive technology in inclusive classes for children with learning disabilities.

Space Apps Cairo is founded upon a group of passionate volunteers who believe they can impact society, foster local innovation and provide an opportunity for the Egyptian youth to collaborating in solving global challenges. 1) Choose a challenge that captures your imagination and uses your skills. Teams will be created from participants interested in working together on particular projects, so you can build your own team or join an existing team at the hackathon.
2) Register on Cairo's page on the International website in order to be eligible to participate and work on a project over the course of the weekend.
3) Once accepted, you will be able to attend the hackathon on 19th- 20th October, 2018 and collaborate to build software, hardware, data visualization, and any other solutions. All solutions must be submitted under an open source license that permits the free and open dissemination of the work. NASA and the other supporting organizations DO NOT own the rights, nor are they committed to utilize any solution developed during the event. See the Legal Statement for more details.
